Central Street rail crossing closed
until early October

The Central Street railroad crossing will be closed until about Oct. 8, N.C. Division of Highway officials said. The division is improving the crossing by installing curb and gutters, as well as a sidewalk along one side of Central Street. A detour takes motorists down Main Street, then northbound on Church Street to Front Street. Motorists can access the Post Office using this alternate route.

Eleven Clayton-area schools opened their doors Monday for the beginning of the 2008-09 school year to 419 more students than passed through them on opening day a year ago.

Only two of the 11 schools that draw most of their enrollment from the Clayton community – East Clayton Elementary and River Dell Elementary – experienced a drop in enrollment from last year. [more]
