DEWEY WESLEY HUGGINS JR.

Dewey Wesley Huggins Jr., 81, of Clayton,

died peacefully Sunday, April 27, 2008 at his

home.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday,

May 7 at 3 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral

Home Chapel, 200 SE Maynard Rd. in Cary.

The family will receive friends following

service at the funeral home. A private

interment will be held at Raleigh Memorial

Park.

He was born in Hickory on March 25, 1927 to

Dewey Wesley, Sr. and Edith Warren Huggins.

By age seven, Clayton had become his home

as his father took over the leadership of the

former Pythian Home for Children.

Huggins attended North Carolina State

University, received his undergraduate

degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College and was

awarded his Masters in Education by the

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He pursued education with the North

Carolina Public School system where he

started as a teacher and quickly rose through

the ranks becoming a District Principal in

eastern North Carolina.

His accomplishments were not limited to the

civilian world as he also enjoyed success as a

Reserve Officer in the United States Army

during the Korean War era where he earned

his commission as an officer and attained the

rank of First Lieutenant.

In the early sixties, Huggins joined his

father-in-law, Wiley Dobbins of Yadkinville,

in his insurance agency. By the early 1980s,

when most would consider retiring, he chose

instead to relocate to the Raleigh/Clayton

area where he resumed teaching.

Best known for his love of golf no matter the

weather, he finally retired in July of 1998 to

one of his favorite courses, Pine Hollow,

where he could be found either playing a

round of golf or offering advice to a

newcomer.

Huggins was preceded in death by his

parents and a sister, Frances Huggins Drew.

He is survived by his sons, Dewey Wesley

Huggins, III and wife Joanna of Yadkinville,

and James Wiley Huggins and wife Leslee of

Rehoboth, Maine; grandchildren, Emma Mary

Huggins, David James Huggins and Samuel

Paisley Huggins.

Memorial contributions may be made to

“Smokey’s Gift,” an endowed scholarship

fund designed to help provide education to

aspiring veterinarians at the NCSU College of

Veterinary Medicine. Memorials should be

sent to the NC Veterinary Medical

Foundation, Inc., NCSU College of Veterinary

Medicine, 4700 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh,

NC 27606.
